Ruth Balis, piano

Ruth Balis, a native of Poland, studied piano with such luminaries as Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski, and chamber music with members of the Guarneri Quartet. She is frequently sought as a pianist in American chamber music circles. Ruth Balis has appeared in recital and as orchestral soloist in Poland, and has performed many solo and chamber music concerts in the United States. She has been heard at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Phillips Collection and the Cosmos Club, to mention a few examples in her busy concert schedule.

Ruth Balis began formal study of the piano at the age of four. After graduation from the Music Lyceum in Wroclaw, Poland, she was admitted to the Warsaw Conservatory, having received the highest rating in the national entrance competition. Her teacher at the Conservatory was the well-known pianist Marya Wilkomirska. Upon emigrating to the United States in 1968, Ruth Balis became a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She studied piano in New York with the revered master teacher Dorothy Taubman, and at Curtis with Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski. She also studied chamber music with Michael Tree and John Dalley of the Guarneri Quartet.
