After graduation from the Music Lyceum in Wroclaw, Poland, she was admitted to the Warsaw Conservatory, having received the highest rating in the national entrance competition. Her teacher at the Conservatory was the well-known pianist Marya Wilkomirska. Upon emigrating to the United States in 1968, Ruth Balis became a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She studied piano in New York with the revered master teacher Dorothy Taubman, and at Curtis with Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski.
