Richard Crawley, tenor

American tenor Richard Crawley has established himself as one of the most exciting singing actors of his generation. He recently opened the 2007 Athens Summer Music Festival portraying Don José in Carmen opposite Denyce Graves with the Greek National Opera. Other triumphs include a debut with the San Francisco Opera as Cavaradossi in Tosca; return engagements to San Francisco Opera for Eugene Onegin, Le Grand Macabre, Dr. Atomic, and Norma; Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera with Opera Santa Barbara; critically acclaimed performances of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Dayton Opera and the Chautauqua Opera; and a debut with Hawaii Opera Theatre as Cavaradossi. With less than 2 days’ notice, and after not performing the role for 5 years, he stepped into the title role of Faust at Portland Opera and received standing ovations and stellar reviews. This season’s engagements include performances with New York City Opera and Toledo Opera.

Other career highlights include performances with Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, New York City Opera (National Company), Atlanta Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Tulsa Opera, Opera Colorado, Lake George Opera, Syracuse Opera, and Augusta Opera. In 1998, Mr. Crawley joined the Hopkins Symphony to perform excerpts from Verdi’s La Traviata.

An accomplished orchestral soloist, Mr. Crawley has performed Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mendelssohn’s Paulus, Haydn’s Harmonie-Messe, Haydn’s The Creation, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and the Mozart Requiem with such organizations as the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, National Cathedral in Washington, National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, Bay-Atlantic Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Concert Artists of Baltimore, Handel Choir of Baltimore, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and at Carnegie Hall.
