Gaetano Panariello, composer

Gaetano Panariello studied at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in Naples, graduating in composition, piano, choral music, and choral conducting. He also studied with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since 2000 he has been director of the Conservatory of Avellino, where he is professor of harmony, counterpoint, fugue, and composition.

He is one of the most-performed Italian composers of musical theatre for youth. Winner of numerous awards, he has debuted two ballets at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Immago (1992) and Agostino (1995). In 1996 his Il suono dei sogni was performed at the Teatro Rendano in Cosenza and in Germany. The following year he was at the Palau de la Musica di Valencia with Tripartita Dominante and Esperia. In 1998 he composed the ballet Pinocchio, which was staged at the Teatro di San Carlo and at the Piccolo Teatro Strehler in Milan for the Teatro alla Scala’s Opera and Ballet Season. For the Chapel of the Pietà of Turchini and Antonio Florio, he composed the oratorio Nativitas. For the Teatro San Carlo he also composed the opera I Cantori di Brema (1999), the ballets Il Guarracino (2000) and La favola di Biancaneve (2002), the musical for treble voices Al lupo, al lupo (2005), and the ballet Sogno di una notte di mezza estate (2007). He has been performed in the US: His Suite Filastroccosa, composed for the Poulenc Trio’s Italian premiere at the Ravello Festival, was played at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in 2006.
