Matthew Stofferahn, composer

Matthew Stofferahn is an active composer and performer in the Mid-Atlantic area. He has played trombone with the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra and with the University of Southern California (USC) Community Orchestra in Los Angeles, as well as euphonium with the USC Wind Ensemble under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds. His works have been performed by numerous ensembles, including the USC Thornton Symphony.

Originally from Henderson, Nevada, he went to USC to study composition with Erica Muhl, Stephen Hartke, Frank Ticheli, and Donald Crockett, graduating summa cum laude in 2003 with a B.M. in music composition and a minor in natural sciences. He was named Outstanding Graduate of the Department of Composition and the Thornton School of Music. He then attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 2007. He was awarded the University’s 2007 Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts “for excellence and the highest standards of proficiency” in the arts while studying an unrelated discipline. The Prize recognized his achievements in both composition and performance.

Dr. Stofferahn is now a resident physician at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, where he is training in emergency medicine and general internal medicine.
