Judith Lang Zaimont, composer

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Judith Lang Zaimont has been a member of the music theory faculty at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore since 1980. She holds degrees from Queens College, CUNY, and Columbia University, and is also a pianist and a writer on music-technical subjects. Among her awards are composition fellowships from the Guggenheim and Woodrow Wilson national foundations, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Presser Foundation, and competition prizes from BMI, ASCAP, and other musical organizations.

Drama and tone color are important elements of Judith Lang Zaimont's compositional style, which uses a chromatic, fully-evolved tonality. Recent works include compositions commissioned by the Gregg Smith Singers, Huntingdon Trio, Florilegium Chamber Choir, Exxon Fund, Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Connecticut Opera. Zaimont's music is frequently played in the United States and abroad; it is published principally by Galaxy Music Corporation and is recorded on the Leonarda and Golden Crest labels.
