Temple Israel Nursery School 1983

This is a large (11x11 inch) folded mailer for the Deutsch Nursery School of Temple Israel (St. Louis MO), for which my mother was the Director for many years. The cover mentions the revamped playground from the spring of 1983, so this brochure is clearly from after that point (the following fall?).

I had a recollection that I had some of my photos published for their publicity, but did not have copies. When I asked my mother about this circa 2012 she did not recall and did not think she had copies.

After her passing in March, 2025, I was carefully going through her papers and found this brochure among other Temple Israel Nursery School papers of hers.

Three of the five photos are mine, but I believe the bottom two on the inside are not. (They are both shot with electronic flash, which the other indoor shots are not. Moreover, the flash I was using in 1982 (Vivitar 2500) could do bounce but not swivel flash, so on vertical shots, one would simply be firing directly, with the flash far out to the left of the camera. The shadow would thus be far to the right of the subject. Thus, the photo of the girl at the easel (shadow prominent to the left) is either not one of mine or was left-right flipped for compositional purposes for this brochure.

The other three images I readily found on contact sheets and then the corresponding original negatives.

The photo of the boys reading together was taken in September 1981, on a Kodak Retina 1b camera. The other photos were taken a year later (September 1982) on a Pentax ME Super (either Pentax 50mm f/2 or Tokina f/3.5-4.5 80-200mm).

These were all shot on Kodak Tri-X (ISO 400) film, and scanned in October 2025 from the original negatives on a Minolta Scan Dual IV with VueScan (and adjusted in Photoshop 2025).
