David Band was a friend and colleague at NASA/GSFC who died in 2009 at age 52 after a multiple-year battle with ependymoma, a spinal cancer. He was the Director of the GLAST (later Fermi) Science Support Center, a gamma ray astrophysics telescope mission. A Memorial Symposium was held a few months after his death to celebrate his many contributions to the field both at Goddard and prior institutions.
The photo was part of my first set of digital image staff photos from September 7, 2001 on a Nikon E990 that belonged to one of the labs in Code 660. The program was an 8.5x11 sheet folded in half.
