Another AstroConfidential photo for Astronomy Magazine. The art director wanted something that said "NASA" and yet showed Thayne at work. Having him sit at a desk with a Mac on it was not a compelling photo, so on a cold December day we tried some photos outdoors, including this one near an electronic sign near our building. The late afternoon sun gave a nice modeling light as one might try to do in a studio, with a touch of fill-flash for a catchlight in the eyes.
