Mission
The Competition is intended to give Johns Hopkins University students not majoring in music a chance to further their musical studies, gain experience in preparing and auditioning for professional musicians, and receive public recognition for their work.
History
Hopkins Symphony Orchestra oboist Hernan del Aguila ‘08 created the Hopkins Concerto & Aria Competition in 2007-08, as a student-run program intended to give Johns Hopkins University students not majoring in music a chance "to further their musical studies, gain experience in auditioning for professional musicians, and receive public recognition for their work." The prize is a performance with the Hopkins Symphony Chamber Orchestra.
The first year’s competition, which Hernan chaired, got a financial boost from a JHU Arts Innovation Grant and a morale boost when Hernan was awarded the JHU 2008 President’s Commendation for Achievement in the Arts. The first competition winners were bassoonist Katie FitzGibbon ’09 and pianist Ji Hea Hwang ’09.
Larissa Woskob ’11 chaired the 2008-09 competition, won by pianist and engineering graduate student Mengyu Lan and cellist Philip Wolf ‘11.
Because no student stepped forward to run the 2009-10 competition, the HSO agreed to organize the event. The 2010 winners were Patrick Hu, violin, and Hyun-Sun Seo, piano.
After spring 2010, the competition moved to alternating years. The 2012 winners were Malinda McPherson, viola, and Matthew Lochner, piano. The 2014 winners were Alice Huang, violin, and Conor Hammonds, tuba.
The next competition is planned for 2017-18.
