Quoted

In numerous cases over the years, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch needed a quote from a local physicist, and Michael was often asked his opinion or his explanation. Some examples are shown below.
  • "Charm Response: Massive Yawn"
Article about announcement of the discovery of new subatomic particle.
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 10 June 1976.
  • "Wait a Leap Second, You Time Freaks"
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 31 Dec 1976.
I (David) can remember from my childhood (and it could very well have been this event of New Year's Eve 1976) sitting with my dad listening to the WWV shortwave radio station for the extra leap second. Normally, a tone sounded every second, punctuated by telling you the time: "beep-beep-beep-beep The time at the tone is 14 hours, 37 minutes, exactly -beeeeep-" (longer tone). We started listening a few minutes before the appointed hour, with 59 beeps before the next minute, except for the special moment when there were 60 beeps between tones. (We recognized even then that it was weird and wonderful to be doing this!)
  • "Planetariums Elsewhere Facing Severe Problems"
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 24 Nov 1982.
  • "'Blue Moon' Rolls Around"
Article about two full moons in a calendar month
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 31 Jul 1985.
  • Sending a Signal: de Klerk Visit is Debated"
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 23 March 1990.
In this case, Michael was interviewed/quoted in an article about the politics surrounding South African President F. W. de Klerk's visit to the US, with Michael speaking from the perspective of a native South African (having nothing to do with physics at all).
  • "Space: Area Experts Criticize New Plan for Station"
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, p. A1, 22 March 1991.
Entire front page of newspaper that day for context (what else was happening that day).
