Although McBride [High School] offered no courses in astronomy, it provided physics and math—and the encouragement of a physics teacher. With the teacher's backing, [Richard] Schmidt and a cousin, Donald Pearson, cajoled Michael W. Friedlander, a professor of physics at Washington University, into letting them use the college's telescope.
